Winneba, April 29, GNA – The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Awutu-Effutu-Senya, Captain (Rtd) Steve Kwamena Armah, has called on facilitators of the Non Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education and Sports to undertake economic ventures to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
He said the government would supply them with logistics and other facilities to promote the functional literacy programme. In a speech read on his behalf at the closing of a 14-day workshop for 130 new facilitators and District Co-ordinators drawn from the Awutu-Effutu-Senya, Agona, Mfantseman and Gomoa Districts of the Central Region at Winneba, Captain Armah said District Assemblies would do their best to ensure the sustainability of the programme to reduce the high level of illiteracy in the society.
He said the nation could not progress without educated citizens and urged the facilitators to impart the knowledge they acquired at the workshop to their learners to help them to improve their living standard.
The DCE asked them to refrain from politicising the programme to enable the government and the people to derive the maximum benefit from it.
He said that contrary to speculations the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government would dissolve the Division it had rather pumped in more financial and material resources to promote its activities. Mr Asnate Adjei, District Co-ordinator for Awutu-Effutu-Senya urged the facilitators to educate the learners and the public about the HIV/AIDS menace since the disease needed collective efforts to fight against its spread.
Nana D E Sackey, Agona District Coordinator of the NFED appealed to District Assemblies to offer the needed assistance to enable the Division to perform effectively.
He called on the District Coordinators to cooperate with DCEs and District Co-ordinating Directors to promote their programmes, adding that, without their involvement they would not achieve the ultimate goals.
Nana Sackey also appealed to the Assemblies to endeavour to provide office accommodation and warehouses to the NFED to promote its activities.
