Thieves cause acute water shortage at Nkawkaw

Nkawkaw, April 22, GNA- Mr Daniel Muomaalah, Eastern Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL),has attributed the acute water shortage facing the Nkawkaw township to the stealing of essential components such as valves and metres attached to boreholes. Answering questions at a Peoples Assembly at Nkawkaw on Thursday, he said the situation was causing delay in the completion of the rehabilitated Nkawkaw Water Project, which is one of the six-town water projects being undertaking by GESTAGUA, a Spanish company. Mr Muomaalah appealed to the people to be vigilant and assist the GWCL to arrest the perpetrators of the criminal act.

The Regional Minister, Mr Yaw Barimah, said the petroleum deregulation exercise was to allow the private sector to invest in the importation and distribution of the products.

This he said would enable the government to raise funds through taxes to finance developmental projects to enhance the living standards of the people.

Mr Barimah said the 50 per cent increment in petroleum prices was due to the rising cost of crude oil on the world market. He said government had imported 1,000 more Mass Metro buses to enhance transportation in the districts.

The Kwahu West District Coordinating Director, Mr Adjei Boahene, said the newly carved District had spent its resources from the HIPC and District Assemblies’ Common Fund to finance a number of development projects including roads, schools, health centres and toilet facilities. At a similar forum at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District, Mr Barimah advised the people not to allow opponents and sceptics of the government to influence them.

He urged them to cooperate with the security agencies to bring down the activities of armed robbers and drug peddlers in the area. The Mpraesohene, Nana Ampadu Daaduam, appealed for the replacement of the obsolete equipment at the Kwahu Water Project at Kotosu, to ensure regular water supply.
