Bawku West chiefs calls for involvement in NHIS

Zebilla (U/E), April 20, GNA – Ten divisional chiefs of the Zebilla Traditional Area in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region have called for the active involvement of chiefs in the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). They contended that since chiefs are the mouthpiece of the people, their active involvement would encourage their subjects to register for success of the scheme.

Nana Azumah Ayeebo, chief of Teshie and spokesman for the chiefs made the call at the maiden meeting of chiefs and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr. John Akparibo Ndebugre in Zebilla on Monday.

He said there was no traditional representative on the NHIS committee in the district and contended that this does not augur well for the implementation of the scheme. The spokesman also alleged that the recruitment of NHIS personnel was done along partisan lines, and that this practice should be discarded since most of the people view the personnel as a party’s agents soliciting for funds.

They called on the MP to use his good office to ensure that the area gets qualified teachers in the schools to raise the standard of education.

They also urged the MP to liaise with his competitors in the last elections and solicit their help to develop the area for all to live in unity.

Mr. Ndebugre thanked the chiefs for their useful suggestions and pledged that their concerns would be addressed accordingly to bring about total development to the area.

He said since the elections were over, all should forget about the past and forge ahead for the common purpose of the society. Mr. Ndebugre promised that he would carry out his mandate in a non-partisan manner in order to embrace all shades of opinions that would contribute constructively towards the overall development of the people.
