Doctor remanded in custody over abortion related death

Asamankese, April 16, GNA- Dr Cyril Laud Bannerman of the Banner Hill Hospital at Nsawam, was on Friday remanded in police custody by the Asamankese Circuit Court, for allegedly terminating the pregnancy of one Phyllis Abena Mensah, leading to her death.
His plea was not taken and would re-appear on April 20. With him in the dock was Flanklin Mensah, a 35-year-old boy friend of Phyllis who took her to the doctor for the abortion.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joseph Idan told the court presided over by Mr Kofi Akrowiah, that Mensah and Phyllis had been in the relationship for three years until the fatal incident occurred on February 23, this year.
He said Phyllis became seriously sick after the abortion and she was rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital for treatment on February 22, but died the next day.
Inspector Idan said a complaint was lodged to the police by the brother-in-law of the deceased.
He said Mensah who went into hiding, however reported himself to the police on March 3 and was arrested.
