Seven rest stops to be developed along major highways

Accra, April 13, GNA – Seven rest stops are to be developed along major highways in the country to enable tourists to have access to washroom facilities, refreshment and other hospitality services when embarking on long journeys.

The project, an initiative of the Ghana Tourists Board is a result of complaints received from tourists about the lack of such facilities in the central business district of Accra.

Mr Martin Mireku, Acting Executive Director of the Board, who made this known at a press conference on Wednesday said the rest stops would be developed at the Y2K Goil Service Station at Medie, Linda Restaurant at Nsutam, Mensco Hotel at Anyinam, Nkawkaw Rest stop, all on the Accra-Kumasi Highway; Hut d’ Eric, Winneba and Elmina Shell Rest stop on the Accra-Takoradi Road.

He said: “We consider the lack of washroom facilities along our major highways and cities unacceptable and inconsistent with making Ghana a competitive and quality tourism destination”.

Mr Mireku said tourism thrived on visitors who recommend tourist sites to others.

“It is therefore important to ensure that tourists… have a safe and comfortable tour”, he said.

Mr Mireku urged the private sector to see the initiative as a viable venture to invest in. 13 April 05
