Takoradi, April 4, GNA – The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) in the Western Region on Thursday destroyed more than 50 million cedis worth of unwholesome goods seized from dealers in Takoradi in the ongoing Post Market Surveillance exercise in the Shama Ahanta East Metropolis. The items, which were seized from 52 supermarkets, shops, wholesalers and petrol filling stations, included canned drinks, biscuits, fruit juices, beverages, chocolates and other consumables.
Mr George Pentsil, FDB officer in charge of Western and Central regions told the Ghana News Agency that, the seized items had long expired, while expiry dates and other relevant information on their labels had been defaced.
Similar exercises are to be held in Sekondi next week and later in other towns he said.
Mr Pentsil said after the exercise, serious offenders would face prosecution while others would be given verbal caution and added that deliberate defacing of dates and other information on the labels of goods constituted a criminal offence. He advised consumers and particularly petty traders to be wary of products they purchased from shops at reduced prices because most of these items have expiry dates.
Mr. Pentsil urged the public to be quality conscious and check the expiry dates on products they purchased. They should also exercise their rights by bringing their complaints to the FDB for redress. 4 April 05
