Retired Nurses and Midwives Association embarks on campaign

Kumasi, March 31, GNA-The Ashanti Regional branch of the Retired Midwives and Nurses Association has planned a comprehensive education campaign to enlighten residents in the Kumasi metropolis and other suburbs on the need to ensure proper hygiene and environmental cleanliness.

The move by the association is also to create awareness amongst the people on the relevance of observing good environmental sanitation in order to avoid the spread of diseases and epidemics.

Mrs. Susana Efaa-Twum, Chairperson of the association, said this at an education campaign organised by the association at the Out-Patients-Department (OPD) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Polyclinic, in Kumasi on Thursday.

She said most diseases like malaria, cholera, diarrhoea, and others, are caused as a result of in-sanitary conditions of the people. Mrs Efaa-Twum stressed the need for the people to de-silt gutters and ensure proper hygiene and environmental cleanliness at their places of abode at all times.

She said efforts of the government to promote tourism could achieve the desired impact if much attention was given to the proper observance of environmental cleanliness and sanitation.

Mr. C.K. Ewool, Secretary of the association, said the association, inaugurated last year, has a membership of 80. He said the association, as part of the programme, is to tour schools, churches and other institutions in the metropolis to sensitise them on the need to observe hygiene and good environmental cleanliness at all times. 31 March 05
