Cape Coast, March 24, GNA – ASP Kennedy Amo, the Central Regional Commander of the Motor Transport Traffic Unit (MTTU), has appealed to motorists and the public for a concerted effort to make this years Easter accident free.
He said some motorists hide behind such festivities to break road traffic regulations.
Mr Amo, who made the appeal in an interview with the GNA at Cape Coast, said ensuring road safety was not the sole responsibility of the MTTU and urged passengers and other road users to report the conduct of drivers who drive recklessly.
He said as much is it was the wish of many passengers to get to their safely, they should not encourage drivers to overload, over speeding or drink alcohol whiles driving.
ASP Amoh expressed concern about the way motorbikes and bicycles were being used in the Cape Coast municipality without license, bells or lights and warned that his outfit would deal ruthlessly with any person caught doing so.
He said a total of 456 traffic offences including over speeding, overloading, drink driving and loading at unauthorised places were recorded last year as against 545 cases the previous year. On motor accidents, he said a total of 1,022 were recorded last year of which 208 lost their lives and 1,336 sustained injuries.
