NCCE Director urges students to study the Constitution

Sunyani, March 15, GNA – Mr. Kofi Adomah, Brong Ahafo Regional Director of National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), has urged students to be abreast with the Constitution to enable them to defend their rights.

“Knowing the constitution will inculcate in citizens the awareness of their civic responsibilities and allow them to appreciate their rights and obligations as free people”, he said. Mr. Adomah was addressing students of the College of Renewal Natural Resources at a one-day forum in Sunyani, organized by the Commission on the need for the formation of civic education clubs. He explained that civic education clubs were non-partisan voluntary organizations dedicated mainly to the study of the Constitution as the fundamental law of the country.

“The clubs also engage their members to observe the rules and culture of good citizenship and good leadership to facilitate national development”, the NCCE Regional Director added. Mr. Adomah explained that membership was open to all citizens, irrespective of age, religion and ethnic background. He said members would engage in debates, competitions, reading, excursions, cultural and entertainment activities that would centre on fundamental constitutional issues.

The regional Director said branches had been established in some schools in Techiman, Atebubu, Sene and Sunyani, all in Brong Ahafo region and expressed the hope to extend their formation to other districts and municipalities.

Mr. Alex Baffuor Afrifa, Dean of Students’ Affairs, urged the students to embrace the idea of forming the club in the college to help consolidate constitutional democracy in Ghana. 15 March 05
