Palm wine taper is granted bail for stealing

Cape Coast March 14, GNA – A circuit court at Cape Coast on Monday granted Kwame Daniel, a 26-year-old palm wine taper from Denkyira-Wawase, four million cedis’ bail for stealing and causing unlawful damage to the property of one Mr Thomas Osei.

He pleaded not guilty and would reappear on Tuesday April 12. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court that both the accused and Osei reside at Denkyira-Wawase and that two months ago Osei engaged Daniel to assist him to distil ”akpeteshie” for a fee of 1.2 million cedis and asked him to provide 100 empty gallons. Inspector Amonoo said although Osei promised to pay the accused immediately they started work he failed to do so and gave him 200,000 cedis.

He said efforts by the accused to collect the rest of the money proved futile and that on the night of February 19 the accused went to Osei’s akpeteshie distilling base and took away the 100 gallons in addition to two drums, five other gallons and 45,000 cedis.

He said the accused also removed containers that had been placed under palm tree for tapping of wine, resulting in the destruction of about 525,000 cedis worth of palm wine.
