Kumasi, March 12, GNA – Master Isaac Hammond, a first year science student of Wesley Grammar School and a great grandson of Tetteh Quarshie, has been awarded an educational scholarship by Kuapa Kokoo Limited, a Licensed Cocoa Buying Company (LBC). The scholarship covers the payment of his school fees, boarding and
books for the three years of his secondary school education. It is in fulfilment of the decision taken by the LBC at its recent annual general meeting at Suhum in the Eastern region to honour the memory of Tetteh Quarshie, the man who first brought cocoa to Ghana, in appreciation of his singular effort that had now provided many Ghanaians with a means of livelihood.
Presenting an initial amount of three million cedis to Master Hammond in Kumasi on Friday to cater for his fees and other school bills for the term, Nana Kwadwo Appiah-Kubi, chairman of the board of the LBC, said as cocoa farmers co-operative they have every reason to be grateful to Tetteh Quarshie. He said although the nation has immortalised the name of that great son of Akwapim-Mampong, those enjoying the fruits of his labour should look at other ways of honouring him. “It is our hope that our modest offer would be appreciated by his family”.
Mrs Emma Okantey, a grand daughter of Tetteh Quarshie, thanked Kuapa Kokoo for the gesture. “We shall forever cherish this gesture and it is our firm hope that it would motivate our son, Hammond, to excel in his academic pursuit”.
