AMA receives computers

Accra, March 11, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Friday appealed to philanthropists and stakeholders to support it in logistics and technical assistance to speed up work in the Metropolis. Mr Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Chief Executive, made this call during the presentation of 100 computers and accessories valued at 50,000 dollars from the Municipality of Amsterdam.

The Chief Executive said it was the aim of AMA to focus on good environmental management, increase revenue generation, effective city planning and maintenance of societal discipline.

“To achieve this aim, we implore all well-wishers to take a cue from the Amsterdam’s gesture by helping AMA secure 50 more garbage vehicles to beef up our present fleet of vehicles, most of which are beyond economic repairs.”

He said the computers would enable the Assembly to network its departments and Sub-Metro District Councils and also have Internet service to enhance the Assembly’s development efforts.

Mr Van der Horst, Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam, said the Amsterdam Municipality would offer computer courses for AMA officials, a helpdesk and maintenance for one year to ensure the endurance of the project. He said the computers and accessories were earmarked for cooperation projects between Accra and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam officials for urban planning project would use 22 of the computers while eight would go to the Judicial Service.

He stated that since March last year the Amsterdam Municipality had implemented a number of projects such as renovation of the pavement of the Royal Primary School in James Town, redevelopment of Ababia Square and Akumadjan Roundabout.

Other projects include educational programmes for officials of the Urban Planning Department of Accra, renovation of the community centre and renovation of old James Town harbour and prison. 11 March 05
