Women urged to contest district level elections

Sekondi, March 11, GNA – Miss Jane Edna Nyame, National President of the women caucus of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), on Friday said the caucus is to organise programmes to empower more women to contest the district level elections next year. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sekondi, Miss Nyame said the educational programmes are also aimed at encouraging women with the requisite qualifications to take up positions as district chief executives.

The programme include regional fora for women who want to contest the district level elections and take up appointments as district chief executives and Presiding Members, Miss Nyame said.

These would be followed by a national conference for women assembly members in July this year in Takoradi, She added.

Miss Nyame, who is the Western Regional Director of the National Council on Women and Development (NCWD) said the women caucus is working hard to meet its target of ensuring that women occupy 40 per cent of positions of district chief executives.

She said sometimes capable women want to take up positions as DCEs and Presiding Members but they are out-manoeuvred by men. Miss Nyame said men should give women a chance and encourage them to serve their communities and the nation.
