Germany lauds ECOWAS, AU stand on Togo

Accra, March 08, GNA – The German Government has welcomed “the determined efforts” of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union to restore constitutional order in Togo also by means of sanctions.

In a statement released by the German Embassy in Accra on Tuesday Mr Kerstin M=FCller, the German Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said by resigning as President of Togo on February 25, Mr Faure Gnassingb=E9 took a first important step on the road to re-establishing constitutional order in Togo.

“Now the way must be cleared for national dialogue between all Togo’s political powers. This includes the introduction of electoral law providing for free, transparent and democratic elections, both presidential and parliamentary,” he said.

Mr M=FCller called for an interim government representing all the political powers in the country to conduct government business until elections are held.

“This is the only way to ensure all political players can be involved in the ongoing democratisation process in the interest of the Togolese people, in building stability and security in Togo and in shouldering responsibility.”
