Kufuor pays tribute to three Educationists

Accra, March 8, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday paid glowing tribute to three prominent personalities for their contribution to education in Ghana.

He said Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, a celebrated Ghanaian Educationist, the Reverend Alexander Fraser, First Principal of Achimota College, and Sir Gordon Guggisberg, Governor of the Gold Coast, infused the entire Ghanaian society with a vision of education that had been beneficial to the country.

President Kufuor paid the tribute when Professor Hans van Ginkel, Rector of the United Nations University and Under Secretary General of the UN, paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.

Professor Ginkel is in Ghana to deliver the three-day Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberge Memorial Lectures under the theme: “Globalisation, Higher Education and Sustainable Development” in Accra from Tuesday March 8 to Thursday March 10.

The Lecture series was instituted in 1957 by the University of Ghana, Legon in recognition of the contribution of the three personalities to the advancement of higher education in Ghana. Professor Ginkel said Universities had to compete at the global level to influence the development of their various countries and stressed the need for University graduates from the various countries to compete at that level.
