Akosombo, March 5, GNA – The government has been called upon to consider releasing at least two of the Mass Transport buses to the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.
Nana Kwame Asiedu II, Asafoatse of Npakadan in the Akwamu Tradational Area, made the request on Friday in an interview with the be considered in view of the industrial, commercial, agricultural and other economic activity in and around Akosombo, Kpong and other parts of the area.
Nana Asiedu called on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the other transport organisations to impress upon their members plying routes in the area especially from Apeguso to Kpong to charge the approved fares.
He stated that since the increases in the price of fuel and the announcement of new fares, commercial drivers in the area had resorted to “arbitary increases in lorry fares”.
The fare for an example from Apeguso to Atimpoku, which was 1,500 Cedis before the fuel increases is now 2,500 Cedis instead of the approved 2,000 Cedis while that from Frankadua to Kpong has been increased from 3,000 Cedis to 5,000Cedis instead of 3,500 cedis, he said.
Nana Asiedu said the drivers were charging above the approved 30 per cent increase and appealed to the transport organisations and the other relevant bodies to intervene to end the tide of friction between drivers and passengers.
