DCE advises drivers to charge approved fares

Tepa (Ash), Feb 26, GNA – Mr Akwasi Adu-Poku, the acting District Chief Executive for Ahafo-Ano North, has advised commercial drivers to charge the new fares approved following the increase in fuel prices. Speaking at a meeting with the executive of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) at Tepa on Friday, Mr Adu-Poku said any Driver caught charging above the stipulated fares would not be spared. The meeting followed complaints from the public that drivers plying Tepa-Kumasi were charging 10,000 and 9,000 cedis for the Urvan and ‘207’ buses instead of 9,000 and 7,000 cedis respectively.

Mr Adu-Poku said the 30 per cent increase was arrived at in the interest of both Drivers and passengers and stated that there was no justifiable for the drivers to charge above that. Messrs Martin Owusu Asante and Kwasi Fosu, who led the executives of the two transport associations, assured the DCE of the compliance of the directive for the drivers to revert to the new approved fares. In another development, Mr Kwaku Boampong, Chairman of the Tepa-Bechem Taxi Drivers Union of the GPRTU, has warned that the executive would not come to the aid of any driver caught charging above the stipulated fares.
