Student remanded for entering University through back door

Accra, Feb. 24, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday remanded into prison custody a 25 year-old level 400 student of the University of Ghana for entering the University through the back door.

He intercepted an admission letter of a colleague, which he used to enter the University.

William Ekow Baffoe was charged with conspiracy and stealing. The Court did not take Baffoe’s plea but asked him to reappear on March 3.

The case as presented by Chief Inspector Peter Bennie was that Mr Jones Kwao Baffour, a former student of Saint Hubert Seminary School in Kumasi, who had good grades, applied for admission into the University of Ghana.

The University offered Mr Baffour admission but someone yet to be identified intercepted the admission letter so he could not enter the University.

Baffoe, who completed Salem Secondary School at Osu in 1998 and obtained aggregate 19 applied for admission but was not admitted. The Prosecution said in 2001 Baffoe followed up to the University and alleged that he met one Solomon who promised to look for his admission letter if he could pay him two million cedis.

The Prosecution said Baffoe alleged that he paid 1.7 million cedis to Solomon leaving a balance of 300,000 cedis.

Armed with the letter, Baffoe gained admission into the University but in 2004, the University asked him to submit his educational, baptismal and birth certificates for scrutiny.

Sensing danger, Baffoe rang Mr Baffour at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and disguised himself as a lady friend of Mr Baffour in United States, who had won a United States Diversity Visa that would enable him to obtain scholarship in America. Baffoe succeeded in convincing Mr Baffour to release all his documents to him through a friend in Accra.

Baffoe went ahead to swear an affidavit to change his name to Jones Kwao Baffour and presented all the documents to the authorities of the University of Ghana.

The University conducted its own investigation and found that Baffoe was former student of Salem Secondary School and his real name was William Ekow Baffoe. 24 Feb. 05
