Saltpond (C/R), Feb. 23, GNA – The Assistant Director in charge of Ghanaian languages at the Curriculum Research Development Division of the Ghana Education Service, Mr David Tetteh Kwame has called on the government to make Ghanaian languages a compulsory subject in the senior secondary schools (SSS).
Mr Kwame expressed dissatisfaction that there were no books to aid the study of local languages at the SSS level and blamed the anomaly on inconsistent policy decisions.
“Syllabuses on Ghanaian languages have become useless since there are no books to guide the teachers and students.”
Mr Kwame who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Saltpond said most publishers feared to invest in the production of Ghanaian language books because of the regular change of government policies on the subject.
“Unless Ghanaian languages are made a compulsory and examinable subjects… the situation will not improve.” Mr Kwame said although the subject was optional in SSS, it is a compulsory subject in the teacher training colleges.
