Court fines farmer for failing to attend communal labour

Mankranso (Ash), Feb 09, GNA – A Mankranso magistrate court on Tuesday fined a 45-year-old farmer, 400,000 cedis for failing to attend communal labour.

Akwasi Addae pleaded guilty to the charge and will serve a six-month prison term in default.

The court further ordered the accused to pay 50,000 cedis to the Potrikrom unit committee.

Mr Antwi Dubick, the Atwima District Environmental Health Officer, told the court that the Potrikrom community had designated Tuesdays as communal labour days.

He said one of such days fell on July 15, 2004, for the community to mould blocks for the construction of a school block but Addae refused to attend the communal labour without permission.

Mr Dubick said the assemblyman for the town and the unit committee went to collect a defaulting fee of 50,000 cedis from the accused but he failed to pay the money.

He said two other attempts to collect the money from Addae failed. Mr Dubick said the accused and five accomplices now at large attacked the assemblyman
