Mfantseman adopts measures to reverse low girl enrolment

Saltpond (C/R), Feb. 2, GNA – A workshop to plan strategies towards reversing the low enrolment of girls in the Nfantseman District has taken place at Saltpond in the Central Region.

The day’s workshop organised by the Girl-Child Education Unit of the Mfantseman District Directorate of Education, discussed the social, economic and cultural problems inhibiting girls’ education and adopted strategies not only to step up the enrolment of girls, but also to retain them in school.

Miss Julia Damalie, District Girl-Child Education Officer, said representatives of school management committees, parent-teachers associations, heads of basic schools, teachers and circuit officers from the Directorate participated in the workshop. She said the workshop emphasised the adoption of “participatory learning activities” (PLA) method to address problems confronting the education of girls.

Miss Damalie appealed to women in top positions to pay periodic visits to schools in their communities, especially in the rural areas, to make the girls to appreciate their status as role models.

She appealed to school authorities to make school environments more appealing to girls to entice their retention in school.

Mr Reemans Osei-Bonsu, School Health Education Coordinator, urged parents and guardians to give their daughters the freedom to decide on the profession or trade they the liked since there was no profession or trade preserved for boys alone.
