Farmers urged to unite to push for favourable agriculture policies

Accra, Jan. 14, GNA – A five-day workshop on Global Food Trading Policies ended on Friday with a call on farmers to form larger and viable associations to enable them to lobby for favourable agriculture policies.

Mr Andrew Addoquaye Tagoe, who is the Head of the Rural Workers Organization of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), organizers of the workshop, told participants that it was important for farmers cultivating the same produce to come together, and speak with one voice.

“Coming together will also facilitate the accessibility of funds for your activities and our voice will be louder.” Mr Tagoe pledged the organization’s support in educating farmers on the activities of the World Trade Organization and its impact on farmers.

The workshop that had participants drawn from the Greater Accra Farmers Association and representatives of other farming groups in the country, had the aim of interpreting international trade implications to farmers to better understand the rules and principles of World Trade. It also aimed at fostering greater interest and engagements on global food issues so that participants would be motivated to continue the learning process.

Most of the participants called on GAWU to help them market their products on the local and foreign markets.
