Football fans appear in court for possessing narcotic drugs

Kumasi, Jan.12, GNA – Six football fans who were arrested at the Kumasi Sports stadium last Sunday for possessing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were on Tuesday remanded in police custody by a Kumasi Circuit court.

The six accused persons were arrested during the titanic football encounter between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in the CAF Confederation Cup final.

Five of the accused persons pleaded guilty to the charge whilst the sixth pleaded not guilty.

They will all re-appear on January 20, 2005.

They are Kofi Gyamfi, 29, a trader resident at Akwatia-line in Kumasi, Kwaku Gyasi, 22, also a trader residing at Old Tafo in Kumasi and Kofi Builsa 32, a labourer at Anloga in Kumasi.

The rest are Ibrahim Nuhu, 27 a charcoal seller and residing at Nungua in Accra and Issaka Amidu, 22 a butcher from Dormaa Zongo in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The Prosecutor, Mr Agyemang Duodu, Principal State Attorney told the court that the accused persons were arrested after a search at the entrance to the stadium on Sunday.

He said the accused persons tried to smuggle the narcotic drugs into the stadium by hiding them in cooked rice, socks, pockets and in their underpants.
