Chief appeals to EPA to enforce government laws on environment

Wenchi, Jan 11, GNA – A traditional ruler has called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure that implementation of government policies on the environment is strictly implemented. Nana Akura-Tua Adu-Twum, Twafohene of the Wenchi Traditional Area, made the call at a seminar for Tree Farmers at Wenchi.

The seminar, organised by the Tree Farmers Association of Ghana, was aimed at educating the farmers on the protection of trees against bush fires with emphasises on protecting the ecological cover of the Tano River.

Nana Adu-Twum who is also the National President of the Tree Farmers Association of Ghana, (TREFAG), said this could be achieved when EPA collaborates with related organisations and non-governmental organisations connected to manage of the environment.

He said development over the years have been at the expense of the environment and that the environment has degraded to unprecedented dimensions as a result of bush fires, deforestation, pollution of the Tano River and other bodies and poor sanitation.

Nana Adu-Twum stressed the need for Ghana National Fire Service, district assemblies and National Disaster Management Organisation as well as anti-bush fire agencies to support vigorous fire education. He appealed to the ministries of Science and Environment and Lands and Forestry to channel resources towards education on environmental issues.

The chief appealed to farmers to consult fire volunteers before preparing their new farms.
