Impasse over election of Speaker continues

Accra, Jan. 7, GNA – The impasse over who would be Speaker of the Fourth Parliament of the Fourth Republic spewed into the open on Friday, with the Majority and Minority sides in Parliament failing to reach consensus over a single candidate as has been the tradition in the last three Parliaments.

When the House finally started sitting after a long delay following the Minority’s disagreement over the Majority’s choice of a Speaker, either side nominated different candidates.

Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong, Majority Leader, nominated Mr Ebenezer Sakyi Hughes, Member of the Council of State, as the Speaker. However, Mr Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader, nominated the Speaker of the Third Parliament of the Fourth Republic, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey.
