Assembly fails to elect presiding member

Kuntanase (Ash), Dec 23, GNA – The Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Assembly on Friday failed to elect a presiding member after three rounds of voting.

None of the two contestants, Mr Joseph Kwasi Assuming, the incumbent presiding member and Professor Peter Gyau, a retired Professor at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), obtained the required two-thirds majority.

In the election conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Assuming polled 36 out of the 62 votes while Prof Gyau polled 26 votes in the first round.

In the second round of balloting Mr Assuming had 39 votes while Prof Gyau polled 23 votes.

After the third voting, in which Prof Gyau had 22 votes while Mr Assuming polled 39 votes, Mr Joshua Ofori Prempeh, the District Electoral Officer, postponed the election. Mr Bright Addai-Mununkum, the District Chief Executive, addressing the Assembly, commended the revenue collectors of the assembly for collecting 1.4 billion cedis, exceeding the 1.2 billion cedis target.
