Mampong-Akwapim (E/R), Dec. 15, GNA – Mr Kwame Asomaning, caretaker of the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm established in 1879 at Mampong Akwapim in the Akwapim North District has suggested to the Government to consider erecting a statute of Tetteh Quarshie at the farm in appreciation of the role he had played in Ghana’s economy.
Mr Asomaning made the suggestion when he conducted a visiting newsman round the 0.38 hectares farm currently being manned by the Cocoa Research Institute (CRI) on Tuesday.
He said most tourists, who visit the farm request to see the statute of the man, who brought cocoa to Ghana from Fernando Po now Equatorial Guinea.
Mr Asomaning hoped that the erection of Tetteh Quarshie’s statute at the farm would attract more tourists and thereby generate more revenue as well as enhance development in the town.
He said cocoa since Independence has become the major foreign exchange earner for the country.
Mr Asomaning disclosed that a rest house and a restaurant are being constructed at the farm to cater for tourists, who visit the farm. The caretaker further suggested that Award Winners of future National Farmers Day should be made to visit the farm before being taken round factories, which use cocoa beans for their products.
This, Mr Asomaning noted, would give a clear picture of the cocoa industry to the farmers and inspire them to double their efforts on their farms to sustain the cocoa industry.
