Accra, Dec. 10, GNA – A number of National Democratic Congress (NDC) women on Friday gathered at the Party’s National Campaign Centre at Osu in Accra and wept over the Party’s loss in the Central Region.
Some of the women attributed the Party’s defeat in Election 2004 to the fact that unlike elsewhere in Africa, the Fantes did not vote on ethnic lines for Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the Party’s Presidential Candidate, who hailed from the Region.
A woman, who could not control her tears and had to be comforted by some of the men around said: “I can’t imagine that we are about to experience four more years under this Government all because the Fantes denied their own man.”
When the GNA visited the NDC National Campaign Centre, the general feeling among the women was that the Central Region votes could have made the difference in the fate of the NDC had the Fantes voted on ethnic lines.
Indeed some of the men present there were of the view that had Prof. Mills won at least in five constituencies in the Region, it could have made a lot of difference in the results.
Another woman, who was weeping, said: “So for four more years our children will stay at home and not go to school because of this exorbitant school fees.”
Just when the women were calming down, Prof. Mills himself emerged from the offices into the main compound and the weeping started again with one woman sitting beside his car saying, “Prof you have to do something about the exorbitant school fees because we can’t pay anymore.”
Prof. Mills stood and listened to her and after she had made her statement he shouted: “Eye zu!” And then encouraged them to take heart. Another woman, who was not weeping, stated that the NDC needed to storm the Central Region and shake the place in a way for the Fantes to see their mistake.
