UNIDO to extend rural assistance project

Abuesi (W/R) Dec.9,-GNA-The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is to extend its Rural Enterprises Development Support (REDS) project, which is expected to end this year. Mr Akmel Akpa, UNIDO Representative in Ghana, Togo and Benin, who announced this when presenting a 100-litre tank, to the Abuesi Fish Processors Association on behalf of the Organisation at Abuesi near Sekondi on Thursday said the project, was being extended due to its successful implementation and huge benefits.

REDS, which was implemented in the Western, Eastern and Volta regions was aimed at assisting small-scale agro processors.

The project intervention areas are entrepreneurial and business skills training, marketing, micro – financing and promotion of good hygiene and manufacturing practices and equipment procurement.

Mrs Grace Adjei-Misa, UNIDO/REDS Project Officer in-charge of the Western Region, said 12 agro processing associations have benefited from the project in the Region.

Mr John Koomson, Head of the Takoradi Business Advisory Centre, said the Lower Pra Rural Bank had disbursed 535 million cedis to about 405 agro processors in the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis and the Mpohor Wassa East District with Abusei Fish Processors Association receiving 223 million cedis. 09 Dec. 04
