Forty-two Atwima teachers end five-day workshop

Nkawie (Ash), Dec. 4, GNA – Forty-two teachers including head teachers, primary one teachers and circuit supervisors in the Atwima District have ended a five-day workshop on literacy at Nkawie. The workshop, which was under the Molteno Project of South Africa, was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Addressing the participants, Mrs Constance Zwane, a South African, who is the Co-ordinator of the Molteno Project, said the programme has been tried, tested and replicated over the years in a number of African countries with success.

In Ghana, Mrs Zwane said the manual of the project has been translated into four local languages including Akuapem and Asante Twi.

Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the Atwima District Director of Education, advised the participants to show more commitment to the programme, which is being pivoted in the district by the Ghana Education Service (GES). The breakthrough in reading ability, he said, is a reflection of a good foundation that is laid for excellent academic work for beginners.

Mr Obeng-Darko said the success of the programme greatly depends on the commitment and active participation of the selected teachers and called on them to be initiative and resourceful.

Mr Baffour Asare-Bediako, an Assistant director of Education in-charge of Human Resource Management and Development, who presided expressed the directorate’s gratitude to the GES and the Molteno Project for extending the programme to the district and was hopeful that it would greatly improve teaching and learning.
