Tumu (U/W), Nov. 24, GNA – A 35-year-old Teacher at Tumu was on Tuesday elected the new Presiding Member of the Sissala East District Assembly in a second round balloting.
The teacher, Mr Godfred Kanton, obtained 14 out of the 24 votes in the first ballot while his contestant and the incumbent, Mr Ahmed Issah, had 10 votes, thereby leaving none of them with the required two-thirds majority of at least 17 votes.
However, shortly before the second balloting, Mr Issah announced his withdrawal, leaving Mr Kanton as the sole candidate, who subsequently got 23 votes.
Mr Kanton thanked members of the House for reposing confidence in him and pledged to work around the clock to bring development and prosperity to the District.
He said the Sissala District had on several occasions been praised for their peaceful co-existence and promised to continue as a unifying force to enable the Assembly to achieve greater heights in nation building.
Mr Kanton called on members of the House not to hesitate in offering him constructive criticisms that could spur him on to work harder.
Mr Salifu Waah, Sissala East District Chief Executive, cautioned members of the Assembly against partisan factionalism, which he described as a disservice to progress and development. “The votes you have cast here for a leader do not count, but it is the co-operation that you will give to the leader to work effectively that will at the end be beneficial to all of us.”
