Use marshy areas for fish farms – Youth urged

Assin Adiembra (C/R), Nov. 20, GNA – The 2004 best fish farmer of the Assin South District, Mr Derrick Owusu-Ambrose, has called on the youth to take advantage of marshy and waterlog areas in the country to establish fish farms.

Mr Owusu-Ambrose who is a pharmacist said fish farming was cost effective and lucrative and advised workers to go into it to supplement their income.

He made the appeal when he led newsmen to inspect 17 fishponds he sunk at Assin Adiembra near Assin Fosu.

Mr Owusu-Ambrose was among 16 farmers in the district honoured for promoting agriculture at the farmers day held at Assin Achiase. Mr Mark Koomson from Ochiso was adjudged the overall best farmer. The best fish farmer was presented with fishing nets, radio cassette player, a pair of Wellington boots and two cutlasses as his prize.

Mr. Owusu Ambrose told newsmen that he decided to go into fish farming due to the scarcity of fish in the area and said as a health worker who knew the importance of fish in a diet, he went into it to support the protein needs of the people.
