Show commitment to curb AIDS – Akobeng

Gomoa Mozano (C/R), Nov. 20, GNA – The Gomoa District HIV/AIDS Monitoring and Evaluation Focal Person, Mr Eric Akobeng, has called for political commitment to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. He appealed to politicians especially Members of Parliament (MPs) to organise programmes to fight the pandemic.

Mr Akobeng was speaking at a forum organised by Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe, MP for Gomoa West, as part of efforts to halt the spread of the disease in the constituency.

He called for the abolishing of cultural practices, which regarded sex education at home as a taboo to enable parents to educate their children on sexual matters and commended the MP for initiating the programme.

The District Focal Person cautioned the people against the settlement of rape cases at home without reporting the culprit to the Police and referring the people involved for HIV test.

Mrs Benyiwa-Doie advised the people to show compassion for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLQHAS) since discriminating against them would make them go underground to spread the disease.

The MP said she was holding discussions with 16 Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to fight the disease in the area. Nana Kwa Donkor III, Chief of Gomoa Eshiem, cautioned students and the youth against indulging in pre-martial sex.

He advised against them not to allow HIV/AIDS to destroy their lives and shatter the hope their parents had in them for the future. Alhaji Osman Moro Fukuyama, a member of Gomoa District AIDS Committee, explained the mode of infection, symptoms and how to prevent it to the people.
