Oversight committee to discipline lazy teachers

Savelugu (Northern Region) 27 Jan. ’99

The Savelugu Nanton district education oversight committee (DEOC), has warned that teachers who absent themselves from classes will face punitive action. Circuit supervisors have been directed to forward names of culprits to enable the committee to act promptly. This was the outcome of an emergency meeting of the DEOC at Savelugu yesterday to discuss the falling standards in education in the District. Mr E.N. Naaso, district director of education and a member of the committee said his office is considering transferring the responsibility of endorsing loan application for teachers to the DEOC to ensure that absentee teachers do not enjoy such facilities. Mr Naaso who is also a member of the Ghana Education Service Council, suggested the demarcation of school lands to avoid encroachment. He asked district assemblies to sponsor students in specific disciplines so they can serve the districts after completing their courses. Alhaji Abdulai Harunna, District Chief Executive and chairman of the DEOC, appealed to members of the district best teacher award search committee, to investigate the background of nominees to ensure that award winners deserve the honour.
