Gang member jailed for illegally possessing firearm

Kumasi, Nov 17, GNA – A Circuit Court in Kumasi on Wednesday jailed an 18-year-old unemployed who attempted to rob Muslims, who were celebrating the Ramadan at Alabar in Kumasi, for one year with hard labour for illegally possessing a gun.

Yakubu Mohammed, believed to be a member of an armed gang that planned to steal the Muslims, was convicted on his own plea. Police Inspector Seth Amofah told the court presided over by Mr K. Essel Mensah that the Neighbourhood Watch Committee at Yelwa-Zongo in Kumasi had a tip-off that the group, mostly made up the youth, had planned to rob the Muslims of their mobile phones and money.

He said when the Committee assisted by the police mounted a barricade at the area where the celebration was going on and searched the people, a locally manufactured pistol was found in the pants of the accused. The court ordered the police to destroy the gun.
