Volta Region identifies 100 potential trouble spots

Ho, Nov 14, GNA – Mr Muhammed Adoquaye, Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, has said the commission had identified about 100 electoral areas as potential political hot-spots in the region in this year’s elections.

This figure, he said, out numbered those of the 2000 elections which he did not state.

This was contained in a document he presented to the Regional Election Security Committee at a meeting in Ho on Wednesday. The document categorised such hot spots as inter-party violence, NPP/NDC rivalry and polarisation due to chieftaincy and ethnic disputes. According to the document NDC/NPP rivalry is visible in Zongo communities in the Akan Constituency.

Ethnic conflicts thought to pose threats to peaceful elections in the region include the Alavanyo/Nkonya and the Peki/ Tsito disputes and pockets of disputes among some communities in the Nkwanta-South, Krachi-West and Krachi-East constituencies.

Mr Adoquaye cautioned that peaceful elections this year would be in the interest of all since the citizenry would have no place of refuge in neighbouring countries in the event of any major election related conflagration.

Mr Kofi Duku Arthur, Volta Regional Police Commander who is Chairman of the Committee, said all was being done by the security services to ensure an incident free election. Heads of Security Services in the region and representatives of all political parties attended the meeting.
