Ghanaian Times

“Violence erupts at Nsawam, as 2 transport bodies clash” is the screaming headline of the Ghanaian Times. The story says residents of Nsawam, a usually quite commercial centre in the Akwapim South District are living in fear.

According to the story, there has been tension in the town because of a misunderstanding between the local branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Adoagyiri Co-operative Transport Union over the right to operate a lorry station in the town.

The tension is said to erupt into violence last Friday when a gang allegedly hired by the GPRTU, stormed the Adoagyiri Co- operative lorry park and attacked passengers and hawkers ending all activities there.

In retaliation, the youth of Adoagyiri went on the offensive, they marched to the residence of the alleged leader of the gang, Ebenezer Mensah, also known as “Boogie”, at Nsawam Ayigbe Town and set the house on fire.

The paper says students of St Martins SSS at Adoagyiri who come from Nsawam were also chased away by the Adoagyiri youth, and the body of Boogie’s relative who had died earlier, was refused access to the Adoagyiri Community Cemetery.

Other stories on the front-page of the Times are the increase in cholera cases to 170 since the first case was reported 18 days ago and the presentation of a final report on the case of VALCO’s blood-sucking Doctor, Dr. J.J. Oldroyd to the Ministry of Health by the Medical and Dental Council.
