Workshop for physically disabled held

Bolgatanga, (Upper East) 25 Jan. ’99,

Dr Albert Tenga, Bolgatanga district chief executive, has called on service providers to take advantage of the District Services Resources Directory (DSRD) to give efficient services to persons with physical disabilities.

He said DSRD is a tool for the general development of the region including the improvement of the living conditions of the physically disabled.

Dr Tenga was addressing participants of a three-day leadership training workshop for district leaders of associations of the physically disabled at Bolgatanga.

The workshop which is sponsored by the Swedish Handicapped International Aid Foundation, is aimed at equipping the participants with skills to enable them to manage their associations in the districts effectively.

He noted that the most effective way of providing services for persons with physical disabilities is to let them participate fully in the decision-making process, adding that government is committed to the provision of efficient services to persons with disabilities.

Mr Charles Appiagyei, national president of the association, said persons with physical disabilities should be treated fairly and given the same opportunities available to able bodied persons.

Mr Appiagyei regretted that development plans do not make room for persons with physical disabilities and urged planners to consider them in future.
