An 18-year-old Ghanaian man has been shot dead in Etobicoke, west of Toronto, nine days after another young Ghanaian was killed in New York.
The victim was identified by his family as Prince Abdul Malik and by the Toronto Police Service as Malik Abass.
Police said Malik Abass, who lived in Mississauga, Ontario, died after being shot near the intersection of Rathburn Road and The East Mall shortly before 16:30 on Saturday, November 7.
The teenager was taken to hospital after paramedics performed life-saving treatment at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.
Toronto police described the killing as the 33rd homicide recorded in the city in 2026. The force issued details about the case in a news release on Sunday, November 8, cited by CBC News.
Inspector Jeff Allington said the suspects had left the area before officers arrived.
“The only description I have in terms of suspects is that they are two male suspects wearing dark clothing,” Allington told reporters at the scene on Saturday.
The Homicide and Missing Persons Unit is investigating the case. Police have not disclosed a motive and are asking residents and motorists in the area to provide any security-camera or dashcam footage that could assist the inquiry.
The shooting happened nine days after 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, another Ghanaian, was shot dead in the Bronx, New York, while travelling to school.
After Malik’s death, a video shared online showed his mother mourning her son.
“Auntie Serwaa, Prince has died and left me. I have no one. If I had known this would happen, I would have called you to come and take him away,” she said.
The Toronto shooting follows two recent deaths of Ghanaians in New York.
Frimpong’s family has retained civil rights lawyer Ben Crump after Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama urged United States authorities to confront gun violence.
A church organist in the Bronx was also found dead two weeks after being reported missing.
