Farmer fined for escaping from lawful custody

Nkawie (Ash), Oct. 22, GNA – A circuit court at Nkawie on Tuesday fined a 40-year old farmer, one million cedis for escaping from lawful custody.

Yaw Badu, a native of Saakrom near Nkawie will serve six months in prison in fault.

Chief Inspector Ben Antwi, told the court that the accused was brought to court on a bench warrant after failing to appear before the court to pay a debt of one million cedis.

He said the accused who was to pay an amount of 1.2 million cedis he owed one Yakubu Bukari of Saakrom, was unable to pay the debt and was therefore kept in the cell awaiting transfer to the Kumasi Central Prison.

Chief Inspector Antwi said while in the cells waiting to be sent to Kumasi, the accused sneaked out of the court cell and took to his heels and was given a hot chase and arrested.
