The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is seeking to improve on its 2024 electoral performance as it restructures its organisation ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
The party’s Acting Director of Elections, Mahdi Jibril, said its ongoing internal elections, including the forthcoming regional polls, were intended to strengthen the NDC and increase its support across the country.
He said the party’s objective was not limited to defending areas where it already had strong support, but to identify every opportunity to gain votes that could help secure victory.
“The focus is for us to win 2028 elections. And wherever the vote will come to make the winning possible, we work on it,” he said.
Mr Jibril said internal unity and stronger electoral results were central to the reorganisation, which is intended to prepare the party’s structures for the next general election.
“We want to work for the unity of the party in the region, and then good performance, improve from what we did in 2024 to 2028 elections. That’s the priority of the party,” he added.
The NDC also intends to build on the number of votes it won in the 2024 elections, rather than simply preserve its existing level of support.
However, the restructuring process has faced difficulties following disputes connected to the party’s constituency elections. These have included petitions, disqualifications and appeals against decisions taken during the internal polls.
Mr Jibril said the party had received 26 petitions and recorded about 22 disqualifications at the voting stage. Some of those decisions were later reversed after appeals were considered.
He said the NDC had addressed the petitions and was continuing to deal with unresolved issues, including the need for reruns and discussions over some positions.
“After the elections, we have positions that are tied. We are resolving those ones. Reruns are ongoing. Some renegotiations are also ongoing. So that is what the party is doing,” he said.
The party is scheduled to elect its regional executives on November 14 and 15. Those elections form part of a wider internal reorganisation that will conclude with the selection of national executives in December.
The process is taking place as the NDC seeks to improve its performance in the 2028 general elections and win additional votes in any part of the country where they could contribute to an overall victory.
