Frank Lampard’s Coventry City climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a convincing 3-1 win over Sunderland, whose sixth defeat in nine league matches leaves them bottom of the table.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni scored for the hosts, who recorded only their third league victory of the season. Enzo Le Fee converted a second-half penalty for Sunderland, but the visitors could not turn the goal into a comeback.
Lampard made four changes to his starting line-up after last weekend’s defeat by Fulham, with captain Matt Grimes among those omitted. The switch helped Coventry produce a much-improved display as they controlled much of the match.
Sunderland’s defensive vulnerabilities played a major part in their problems. Coventry opened the scoring in the 17th minute when the visitors failed to clear a routine cross. The loose ball reached Sakamoto, who finished superbly from the edge of the penalty area.
The goal increased the pressure on a Sunderland side that had struggled for consistency, and Coventry extended their advantage eight minutes before half-time.
Luke O’Nien was dispossessed too easily by Awoniyi in the 37th minute. The Coventry forward then drove into the visitors’ defence, finding little resistance as a series of weak challenges failed to stop him. His shot took a deflection before finding the net.
Sunderland had offered little going forward in the opening half. Brian Brobbey came closest to scoring for the visitors, but his attempt was off target and they were unable to match Coventry’s attacking threat.
The hosts effectively settled the contest seven minutes after the restart. Rudoni’s shot struck Sunderland defender Omar Alderete, who had stretched out a leg in an attempt to block it, and the deflection sent the ball beyond the goalkeeper to make it 3-0.
Sunderland did create chances to reduce the deficit. Chemsdine Talbi missed a promising opportunity before the visitors were awarded a penalty following a lengthy review by referee Simon Hooper.
The decision concerned a handball by Coventry defender Ethan Pinnock, who had raised his arm while trying to block a shot from O’Nien. Le Fee took responsibility from the spot and scored in the 67th minute, giving Sunderland a potential route back into the game.
Coventry, however, remained in control and saw out the match without allowing their opponents to build momentum.
Sunderland’s afternoon ended on an even worse note in stoppage time when Alderete was sent off. He received a second yellow card for bringing down Rudoni, leaving the Black Cats with 10 players.
The result leaves Sunderland at the foot of the Premier League standings after a run of six defeats in their past nine league matches.
