College of Art inaugurates computer laboratory

Kumasi, Oct 20, GNA – A computer laboratory built for the College of Art of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at the cost of 80 million cedis was on Monday inaugurated. The 21 computers and their accessories were bought from contributions of the Art Society of KNUST.

In a speech read on his behalf at the inauguration, Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, called on art students and artists to explore new avenues for enhancing their creativity to enable them contribute meaningfully to national development.

He said globalisation had made the study of art one of the essential evolving programmes that needed to be intensified and taken seriously to enable it permeate all spheres of national life. “The use of teaching and learning aids as pictures, charts and models of animate and inanimate objects, books and illustrations are indispensable in effective teaching at all levels of education from the nursery to the university”.

Professor Andam asked the students to advertise their prowess in art works so as to create public awareness on the importance of art in human existence.

In a solidarity message to the Art Society on the inauguration of the laboratory which formed part of the 54th anniversary of the College of Art Week, Nana Dr Susubribi Krobea Asante, Omanhene of Asante-Asokore and President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, entreated the students to strive to distinguish themselves from the informal sector by coming out with innovative works.
