Temple renovation provides central theme

The fourth episode takes viewers inside the Salt Lake Temple as it undergoes extensive renovation. Between 700 and 800 construction workers are present at the site on any given day.

With the help of YouTuber Zack Nelson and his wife, Cambry, the participants examine temple models on an earthquake simulator. The demonstration explains why the 19th-century building needed further reinforcement.

The temple weighs an estimated 188 million pounds (approximately 85,000 tonnes) and is supported by 98 base isolators. These allow the structure to remain relatively stable while the ground moves during an earthquake.

It is also reinforced by approximately 262 miles (422 kilometres) of cables, tensioned to 10,000 pounds per square inch. The cables connect the stone blocks from the foundation to the spires.

The importance of that work was highlighted by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Utah in 2020, which caused movement in blocks of the temple.

The episode links the building’s physical strength with the foundations of Christian faith. The base isolators represent Jesus Christ as a source of stability, while the cables symbolise daily prayer, scripture study and temple worship.

The young adults also meet senior Church leaders, including Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

“In our lives, we have our own earthquakes and points where we shake and we might have cracks,” Ms Okeke said. “But if we want to strengthen that foundation, Christ can help us. We are not perfect; we make mistakes, we fall. But one thing we were reminded of is that we are never too far from the reach of God.”

A similar screening of the third episode took place the previous Saturday at a meetinghouse beside the Mexico City Mexico Temple.

For Nana Yaa Agyeiwaa, a Church member in Accra, watching the latest episode with others offered a different experience from following the first three mainly through YouTube while driving to work.

“Having to sit with my friends and watch it, it just felt different, because I was able to see the reactions from other people. It made it better,” she said.
