The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) is awaiting a letter from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to the Finance Minister before deciding whether to end its strike.
The letter is expected to set out proposals addressing the association’s concerns and was one of the conditions agreed at a meeting on Monday for the industrial action to be suspended.
GAUA General Secretary Charles Kojo Aidoo told TV3’s News Central on Thursday, 15 October 2026, that the commission had yet to send the document.

He said the association remained hopeful the letter would be delivered before the FWSC’s deadline on Friday. GAUA would then consult its members on the proposals.
“If what is in the letter is in line with what was agreed, the strike will be called off. But if it is not in our interest, we will inform the public whether the strike will be called off or not,” Mr Aidoo said.
According to the general secretary, GAUA has already outlined to the commission the issues and proposals that must be included. He said the FWSC was therefore fully aware of the association’s expectations.
Concerns over GTEC letter
Mr Aidoo also criticised the tone of a letter sent to GAUA by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which instructed the association to suspend its strike to allow public universities to reopen.
He said the wording of the letter was not professional enough.
GAUA members working in public universities across the country began the strike over fair wages and conditions of service. The action has disrupted administrative operations on campuses nationwide.
The dispute has led to negotiations involving GAUA, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and GTEC.
GAUA has said universities will remain open while the discussions continue.
