Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, the son of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has died, his family has confirmed.
He died on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. His burial will take place on Saturday, 17 October in line with Islamic traditions, the family said. No further information about the circumstances of his death was immediately available.
Born in Accra in 1958, Gamal Nkrumah was the son of Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah.
He was a journalist and editor at Al-Ahram Weekly, the English-language publication of Egypt’s Al-Ahram press organisation, where he worked for more than 15 years.
During his career, he covered international affairs and wrote extensively about African and global politics. His work focused particularly on Pan-Africanism and Africa’s role in world affairs.
Nkrumah studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where biographical accounts say he obtained a doctorate in political science.
His sister, Samia Nkrumah, is a Ghanaian politician who previously represented Jomoro as a Member of Parliament and served as chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
His younger brother, Sekou Nkrumah, is a writer and political activist based in Ghana.
Through his reporting and political commentary from Cairo, Gamal Nkrumah linked Ghana’s political history with Egypt’s media environment. His journalism examined issues affecting both Africa and the Middle East.
