Police arrest blind man for fraud

Accra, Oct. 15, GNA – The Visa and Documentation Fraud Office of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Friday arrested a 50-year old blind man who has defrauded a number of people. Eric Kofi Asiedu, who lives at Kojo Sardine at La Accra, poses as a visa contactor and also forges bank statements for his clients. Mr Patrick Ampewuah, Deputy Director, CID, told the Ghana News Agency that a Ghanaian student, who was looking for a bank statement to enable him to travel to Canada to pursue further studies, was introduced to Asiedu as an expert in that field.

He said Asiedu then took over one million cedis from the student and subsequently provided him with a bank statement. Mr Ampewuah said when the student turned up at the Canadian High Commission it was discovered that the bank statement was forged. He said the student then reported the matter to the Police. When Police went to arrest the suspect at his house to assist in investigations the suspect slammed the door on the Police officer hurting him in the process.

Mr Ampewuah said when the Police searched the house of Asiedu, they discovered several invitation letters from the United States, passports, Land Title Registration Certificates, birth certificates and fake bank statements.

Police said he Asiedu has been remanded into prison custody by a court pending further investigations.
