Disaster Day launched in Fanteakwa

Ahomahomasu (E/R), Oct. 10, GNA – Mr Ebenezer Ofoe Caesar, the District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa, at the weekend urged Ghanaians to help the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to prevent fire outbreaks and other disasters so that funds allocated for such occurrences could be used for development projects.

Mr Caesar made the call at the launch of the Fanteakwa District celebration of the World Disaster Day at Ahomahomasu, near Begoro. He appealed to traditional rulers, assembly members and other opinion leaders to collaborate with NADMO to educate the people on disaster preventive measures.

The District NADMO Co-ordinator, Mr Kwame Appiah Kodua, asked Community Based Disaster Volunteers to nurse tree seedlings for distribution to farmers for agro-forestry towards the resuscitation of degraded vegetation.

The Fanteakwa District Fire officer, Mr Agyapong Dwemoh, advised the people against building of structures along waterways to prevent flooding and urged fire volunteers to educate the public on the dangers of environmental degradation.

He appealed to Parliament to review the PNDC Law on bush fire to ensure that offenders were severely punished to serve as a deterrent to others.
