Passengers get stranded at Winneba

Gomoa Mprumeam (C/R) Oct. 6 GNA – A three-day continuous heavy down pour in the Gomoa and Awutu-Effutu-Senya districts has rendered a portion of the Winneba Junction-Mankessim trunk road at Gomoa Mprumeam impassable creating an acute transportation problem in the area.

Vehicles from Apam to Accra are currently passing through Agona Swedru before joining the road at Kasoa, while those from Winneba to Kumasi also pass Agona Swedru and Mankessim, making the journey very long and tiresome

Mr. Kofi Atta, chairman of the Winneba branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trades Union Congress told the Ghana News Agency at Gomoa Mprumeam on Wednesday that the situation had created acute transportation problem for travellers.

According to him the situation had forced passengers who normally take vehicles coming from Takoradi, Cape Coast and Mankessim at Winneba Junction to get stranded at the Accra station at Winneba.

He said that the bad nature of the present by-pass created the contractors working on the Mallam-Kasoa-Yamoransa road had damaged most of their vehicles and appealed to the contractors to periodically repair the road.

Most passengers told the GNA at Winneba junction that those traveling from the Junction to Apam are now paying 8,000 cedis instead of 3,000 cedis because the drivers are now passing through Agona Swedru.
