NPP to Lose Obuasi Seat

… As opinion poll puts independent candidate ahead

An OPINION poll conducted by SHAFT FM a local radio station here in Obuasi on Saturday on ‘Politalk’ programme, to access the chances of the three parliamentary candidates in the Obuasi constituency -Mr Justice Dasah (NDC), Mr Edward Ennin (NPP)and Mrs. Adelaide Borden, Independent candidate – clearly puts Mrs. Borden ahead of the other two contestants.

All three candidates were in the studios of SHAFT Fm to tell the electorate what they intended doing when given the mandate after which callers were given the opportunity to air their views.

Out of 16 callers, Borden had 11 and Ennin had 4, while Dasah had one.

Borden, popularly known as Auntie, is said to be the favourite because of the vocal stance she took when she was a union secretary for the AGC, which is now Anglo Gold Ashanti.

According to the opinion poll, the electorate had decided to vote for Borden because the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr. Bright Boadi Mensah, could not live up to expectations and they therefore thought Ennin would act in the same manner.

Mr. Mensah did not contest in the primary because he wanted to give the chance to a younger politician in the party.

But the people contend that the MP could not fulfil the promises he made during the 2000 elections.

Another reason given by the electorate was that they would vote for President Kufuor in the presidential slot and vote Borden as independent. This is because, according to them, President Kufuor had not failed them but rather the MP.

Also they contended that they wantedto vote in favour of the lady because this is the first time a woman would be contesting the seat in the history of Obuasi.

According to them they would not vote for the NDC because the partyfailed the nation duringits eight years rule.
